Current State of the O's

Photo: Getty Images
The Orioles are currently sitting in last place in the A.L East with a 30-33 record. Yeah, it’s not what a Baltimore fan likes to see. I’ll take it though. Let’s look at the glass halfway full. At this point last year, the O’s were sitting 23.5 games out of first place. The pressure to fire Dave Trembley was mounting, and the O’s only had 17 wins. The birds are only three games under the 500 mark, and there are some encouraging signs that things will get better.
J.J Hardy has captured the attention of the black and orange faithful, and as well as my girlfriend (but for non-baseball reasons). He is hitting .301, and not only is that an average any manager would love, but it’s pretty darn good considering last year the O’s were stuck dealing with the weak offense provided by Cesar Izturis. Let’s hope we give Hardy that extension.
Now today, Mark Connor announced his resignation from his pitching coach job. He cites personal reasons, but people are already buzzing that it may be because he lacked player approval. Some also say that it is because of the fact that Brian Matusz is struggling and the O’s are trying to fix the problem. The Orioles welcomed Rick Adair aboard as the new pitching coach, and he is no stranger to the position. He has served seven years as pitching coach, and hopefully he can help stabilize our rotation. If that’s even possible. Better yet, maybe he can somehow save the Mike Gonzalez project. Now that’s impossible.
Right now, the O’s are locked in a 5-5 tie in the 8th against the Jays following Wieters’ homerun. Let’s see if the birds can walk away with the W. Maybe another Luke Scott bunt will seal the deal tonight. Three’s a charm…

2011 NBA Finals = RIP NBA?

(Image: nba.com)
So "The Big 3" have made it. Whether you love them or hate them, they are fighting for the national championship. It's a rematch of the 2006 NBA Finals, which crowned the Heat as champions in a 4-2 series. Things are a little different now, as Eric Spoelstra is standing in the spot that the legendary Pat Riley filled in 2006. Rick Carlisle is the head coach of the Mavs, and the Avery Johnson experiment is over. Will the outcome be the same? I'll say yes... just about.
With that said, if I'm right, it could the sign of the apocalypse for the NBA. There in no salary cap in the NBA. So if Wade, Lebron and Bosh are champions at the end of the series, they are setting precedent. A very scary one as a matter of fact. The message is this: this whole "super team" thing, it works. It actually works.
Guys like Dwight Howard and Chris Paul will learn from this, and could try and make super teams of their own. As a matter of fact, the NBA could turn into a circus of athletes trying to make unbeatable teams. Players won't try to carry teams anymore like Iverson did with the 76ers. To me, this new era is the equivalent of steroids and the MLB. Teams will be inflated with superstars, and there will be no balance in the league. No balance, no fairness, no fun as spectators of the sport.
For the sake of the NBA's future, I hope I am wrong with my prediction. The league is already in trouble with a possible lockout. I hope Dirk can bury the heat and Kidd gets a championship. Let's call the Mavs, "the good guys."
Prediction: Miami wins series, 4-2
Jim Tressel Resigns

(Photo: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)
As you all have heard, Jim Tressel resigned Monday morning after a cloud of NCAA infractions and violations. The NCAA is currently investigating whether Ohio State quarterback Terelle Pryor recieved cars and other benefits during his first three years with the Buckeyes. 28 players are also involved in a scandal, which consists of the players selling memorabilia for tattoos. Tressel did not initially report this activity, adding to his list of infractions with the NCAA.
In this case, it comes down to the player having the coach's back and the coach having the player's back. I think Tressel was willing to throw himself into the line of fire for his players. There is no way he thought he could get away with all of this. He knew it would all catch up to him sooner or later. While the NCAA frowns upon it, he took the bullet for his players. While I do think covering up for his players is commendable, it is not defendable in my opinion. You have to coach and play fair.
Bottom line: There are so many coaches out there doing the same things as Tressel, they just have not been caught yet. Their time will come, and their reputation will be tainted. Speaking of reputation, where will Tressel's career go from here? Will another big time football school pounce on him or shy away because of his "baggage?" I think he will step on the field again with a major conference.
Tressel leaves behind a 106-22 record at Ohio State.

New Terps Uniforms?

After a successful season, the Terps are hitting the field with a new coach, and a new look to their uniforms. Here is a sneak peak of what you may see on the field next year. What do you think?
